About OHV Trail Finder
OHV Trail Finder is an independent data project that turns the U.S. Forest Service's Motor Vehicle Use Map data into a fast, free finder for legal off-road riding. Every mile, vehicle designation and season traces to the public MVUM route data, the method behind each figure is documented, and nothing on the site is sponsored or pay-to-rank. It exists because this information otherwise lives only in clunky per-forest PDFs — hard to search, filter or load into a GPS.
What this site is
OHV Trail Finder is a free, no-signup finder for legal off-road riding on U.S. national-forest land. It turns the U.S. Forest Service's Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM) route data into something you can actually search: pick a state and a vehicle type to find the ranger districts with designated routes, then open any district for its miles, a per-vehicle access matrix with seasons, a route-network map, and GPX downloads.
It covers 448 ranger districts across 40 states and 106 national forests — 231,615.7 miles of motorized routes in all.
Why it exists
The information riders need — which routes are legal, for which vehicle, in which season — is public, but it lives only in clunky per-forest PDFs and GIS downloads that are hard to search, filter, or load into a GPS. People pay apps to serve exactly this data. This project makes the underlying public map data usable for free.
How it's built
Every figure is derived directly from the Forest Service MVUM data — the Roads and Trails layers of the Enterprise Data Warehouse map service — with state assignment from U.S. Census boundaries. The method behind each number is documented on the methodology page, and every page carries a data-vintage stamp. Nothing on the site is sponsored, and no page is pay-to-rank.
